Former EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde, dies at 61
Ibrahim Lamorde, former chairman of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has passed away at the age of 61. Family sources report that Lamorde died in Egypt on Sunday morning, where he had traveled for medical treatment.
Born on December 20, 1962, in Mubi, Adamawa State, Lamorde joined the Nigerian Police Force in 1986 and retired as a Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2021. He graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in 1984.
Lamorde’s tenure at the EFCC was marked by two key periods. Initially, he was the pioneer Director of Operations when the commission was established in 2003. He served as acting chairman from December 2007 until June 2008. He was appointed again as acting chairman on November 23, 2011, following the removal of Farida Waziri by President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Senate confirmed him as the third substantive chairman on February 15, 2012. Lamorde held the position until November 9, 2015, when President Buhari replaced him with Ibrahim Magu.
Lamorde’s leadership in the EFCC was noted for his efforts in combating financial crimes and corruption in Nigeria. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in the country’s anti-graft history.
