Northeast Governors’ Forum demands urgent action on power blackout

The Northeast Governors’ Forum (NEGF) has issued a communiqué calling on the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to immediately restore power to the region, which has been plagued by a blackout for over a month.
The Forum, chaired by Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, expressed dismay at the nonchalant attitude of TCN in addressing the issue, which has crippled economic activities in the region.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, reading the communiqué, stated that the Forum has resolved to establish a 10 megawatt solar power plant in each state to address the energy deficit. The Forum also urged the Federal Government to direct TCN to take immediate action to restore power to the region.

The communiqué noted that the region’s infrastructure development is being hindered by contractual encumbrances on federal roads and a poor rail system. The Forum called for the inclusion of the region in the Nigerian National Railway Transport Plan and the National Road Plan, using modern gauge rail and national road networks.
The NEGF expressed deep concern that the Northeast region, with a land mass of nearly 300,000 square kilometers and a population of over 35 million, has only one transmission line supplying six states, making it the most vulnerable and disadvantaged for industrial development and economic growth.
The Forum commended the Bauchi State Government for hosting the meeting and announced Damaturu, Yobe State, as the venue for the 11th NEGF meeting scheduled for August 2024.
The governors reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a common ground and pursuing a collective cause on matters of security, social, and economic integration of the region.
