Senate commences public hearing on old national anthem bill
The Nigerian Senate has commenced a public hearing to deliberate on a proposed legislation aimed at establishing a fresh national anthem and associated issues.
During the hearing, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele recommended the adoption of the second verse of the current anthem as the national prayer, subject to further consultations, if necessary.
Attorney General and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi emphasized the need for a more extensive consultation process beyond just legislative actions, ensuring that any modifications align with the desires of all Nigerians.
Renowned lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria Mike Ozekhome voiced his support for the amendment, highlighting the existing anthem’s connotation of oppression and advocating for a more uplifting national symbol.

Ozekhome also mentioned proposing a change in name to “Iregime” and suggested a nationwide referendum to comprehensively address the matter.
The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters is set to provide a report on the legislation within a fortnight.
It is worth noting that the House of Representatives had previously approved a bill to revert to the former national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
