The Unbridled Audacity of Thugs: A dilemma of responsibility
The latest incident of thug and soldiers’ brawl in Banex Plaza, Abuja, has made many to be numb and puzzled.
The fact that the hoodlums could even think the officers in uniform were fair game is a sad indictment of the growing disregard for authoritative systems that has manifested in our society, as surveilled by compliance officers.
The event is an indication of the wider problem that has developed in our country -the impunity which has taken root. Citizens who believe that they are immune to the rules and can commit crimes with no repercussions become more empowered to the extent of bringing to task even the most senior security officers, “the Army’s.”
It was the soldiers, rather, who were trying to do their good duty, and they tragically had to suffer from the pushing of the crowds and aggression just for doing the job they were assigned.
It reinforces the point that security personnel are not just faceless and promptly addressed figures, but hooded men and women who deserve our consideration and protection.
The issue also gives rise to uncertainty on the security climate in the city.
What kind of boldness required a massacre so sound in the streets where everything could be seen?
What does it say for the security effectiveness of operation?
Why do people disrespect security and the law?
It’s a result of a Lack of trust in government and institutions, fueled by corruption and abuse of power, which is the major contributor to this. Added to it is the poverty and frustration that translates to desperation and hopelessness.
Or maybe it’s the cultural and societal factor in which there is the belief that the law does not apply to everyone. Political instability, corruption, and impunity at the top have brought this culture of disrespect. Furthermore, ineffective law enforcement and economic disparity compound the same situation. It might also be a result of historical grievances and unresolved tensions.

Well, quality of the reaction of the people in the results of the incident is the most important element. Such a position is a welcome change in the situation due to the Nigerian army’s prompt condemnation and coming back to tackle the problem. It gives the power to prevent this kind of behaviour producing this intolerance.
But the pattern of such denial deserves a special grievance. Some foundation works must be addressed treating the problem as a whole – culture of impunity, lack of accountability and lawlessness

The violent event at Banex Plaza is a terrible example of what we may experience in our community. Therefore, we should be aware of what is going on around us and take necessary actions.
It is the message that we must put in action steps for getting a society that appreciates rule of law, respect and accountability. Anything less is a disservice to ourselves, our security personnel, and our nation as a whole.
