Family demands justice as police officer dies mysteriously during patrol

The family of Inspector Sunday Peter, a member of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Police Command, is demanding justice after his mysterious death during a patrol.

The inspector, originally from Epeagbo Otukpa in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State, was found dead with cuts on his neck and bruises on his body, contradicting the police’s claim that he fell ill and died.

According to family sources, Inspector Peter left for patrol on May 16, 2024, but did not return. The next morning, his family was informed of his death and that his body had been taken to the morgue.

The police stated he fell sick and was rushed to a hospital, which required a deposit of N100,000 before treatment. However, hospital staff confirmed he was brought in dead.

Further investigation at the mortuary revealed injuries on Peter’s body, suggesting he was killed. The family alleges that the Lagos State Police Command is pushing for a quick burial without clarifying the cause of death. Inspector Peter’s wife, also a police officer, is reportedly reluctant to challenge the authorities.

A petition has been submitted to local representatives in the National Assembly, urging for an autopsy and thorough investigation.

The family calls on Nigerians, especially from Benue, to demand justice and prevent a hasty, unexplained burial.

“This is not the first time a police officer has been killed and buried without clarity on their death,” a family source stated. “We need our political leaders and the public to stand up and demand justice for Inspector Peter.”
