In a bid to achieve its ambitious revenue target of N2.3 trillion for 2024, the Apapa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service is revolutionising its inspection practices, prioritising non-intrusive scanning technology.
“The adoption of non-intrusive inspection technology not only expedites cargo examination but also mitigates the risk of duty evasion, thereby safeguarding government revenue,” emphasized Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, the Customs Area Controller, highlighting the critical role of modern customs practices in bolstering revenue generation and trade facilitation.

“Despite challenges, including a slight revenue dip in May, the command remains steadfast in its commitment to meeting monthly targets and ensuring strict compliance,” affirmed Comptroller Olomu.
The integration of scanning technology has made non-compliant traders uncomfortable, forcing them to resort to desperate measures to evade detection. However, the command’s unwavering dedication to thorough inspections and trade facilitation ensures that compliant traders are prioritised and revenue leakages are minimized.
To further expedite cargo delivery and alleviate congestion, the command has intensified engagements with industry stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of waterway transportation as a faster alternative to road transport.

Comptroller Olomu emphasized the importance of scanning technology and the need for physical examinations in certain cases to ensure accurate cargo classification and revenue appraisal.
“As the command continues to implement stringent inspection measures and embrace innovative solutions, it remains at the forefront of revenue generation within the Nigeria Customs Service, setting a benchmark for operational efficiency and fiscal responsibility,” concluded Comptroller Olomu, reassuring stakeholders of the command’s commitment to transparency and operational excellence.
