Court dissolves 7-year-old marriage over wife’s infidelity
Story from Usman UMAR
An Area Court in Center-Igboro, Ilorin, Kwara State, has annulled the marriage between Majeed Suleiman and Ganiyat Suleiman at the request of the husband, citing the wife’s adultery.
The presiding Judge, AbdulKadir Ahmed, noted the frustration of the petitioner and the indifferent attitude of the respondent after listening to both parties.
Ahmed emphasized that divorce should not be rushed into, but in cases where one party is adamant and unable to tolerate their partner, divorce may be necessary.
The Judge subsequently dissolved the marriage between the couple and instructed the wife to observe a three-month Iddah period in their matrimonial home.
He also mandated that the wife complete all necessary steps of divorce before receiving a divorce certificate, with the husband continuing to fulfill his responsibilities towards her.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the husband claimed that his wife had been engaging in extramarital affairs for over seven years and expressed his inability to continue tolerating her behaviour.
The wife, on the other hand, expressed her desire to salvage the marriage and stated that she had attempted to discuss the issues with her husband, but he refused to engage in a conversation.
