Customs set to transform ports with advanced scanning technology (Pictures)
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has partnered with Trade Modernisation Project Limited to deploy cutting-edge Gantry Scanners capable of processing 200 containers per hour. This development is part of the Service’s comprehensive Trade Facilitation Programme, spearheaded by Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi.
According to Ahmed Ogunsola, General Manager of Trade Modernisation Project Limited (TMP), the innovative technology will significantly reduce the time spent on container clearance and document processing. “Our goal is to streamline the entire process, making it faster and more efficient,” he explained.
The modernisation project, situated within the NCS Management Estate in Abuja, has brought together IT experts and software developers to create a seamless system for export and import transactions. The Unified Customs Management software, designed in collaboration with Customs officers, will utilise geospatial technology to facilitate trade.

Ogunsola emphasized the importance of involving Customs officers in the development process, ensuring a sense of ownership and minimising the risk of project failure. The 20-year concession is divided into three phases:
– Phase 1 (Years 1-6): Deployment of all systems, including hardware, software, and technology services.
– Phase 2 (Years 7-13): Management, maintenance, and replacement of systems as needed.
– Phase 3 (Years 14-20): Transition of system management to NCS officers, with TMP providing support and training for a seamless handover.
Chief Superintendent of Customs Usman Abba, a team leader on the project, highlighted the benefits of the new system, enabling importers to monitor goods clearance processes remotely. “The system will provide real-time tracking, eliminating the risk of fraudulent activities by agents,” added Abdullahi Maiwada, National Public Relations Officer of the NCS.
The deployment of this advanced technology is expected to transform Nigerian ports into efficient and competitive trade hubs, aligning with international standards.
