First female Nigerian Army officer trained at UK military academy promoted to lieutenant

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, has given the go-ahead for the promotion of Second Lieutenant Oluchukwu Owowoh to the rank of Lieutenant within the Nigerian Army.

This announcement was made by the Nigerian Defence Academy in a statement released on X.com on Wednesday.

The statement from the NDA on Wednesday stated, “During the decoration ceremony held on June 26, 2024, at the Nigerian Defence Academy Officer’s Mess and Golf Club, Major General JO Ochai, the NDA Commandant, praised Lt. Owowoh’s exceptional performance as a cadet, recognising her as the first female Nigerian to receive training at the esteemed Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and her subsequent promotion.”

The ceremony was attended by high-ranking military officials, as well as academic and non-academic staff, and family members, among others.

PUNCH Online reported in April that at the age of 24, Owowoh had made a significant breakthrough by becoming the first Nigerian female officer to successfully graduate from the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, in the United Kingdom.
