Story from Usman UMAR

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has criticized the state judiciary for allegedly granting bail to bandit leaders who were arrested over weapon possession while they were still on trial.

Governor Lawal alleged that influential figures in Abuja intervened and ensured the immediate release of the suspects.

Lawal made these remarks during the swearing-in of new magistrates in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, where he lauded some judiciary members for their dedication and honesty.

He recounted the arrest of the bandit leaders in Bauchi and Gusau, emphasizing the need for the judiciary to operate with integrity.

The governor urged the newly appointed magistrates to perform their duties diligently, emphasizing the importance of upholding the law for the benefit of law-abiding citizens amidst the prevailing security challenges, including banditry and kidnapping.

Similarly, Chief Judge Justice Kulu Aliyu encouraged the magistrates to prioritise honesty and commitment in upholding the judiciary’s reputation, noting the public scrutiny they face in their roles.

Governor Lawal previously expressed concerns about the worsening insecurity in the state, attributing ongoing negotiations between prominent Abuja residents and bandits to escalating criminal activities.

He highlighted his lack of awareness of all the details in the negotiations and said they contribute to the state’s security woes.
