Governors promise better minimum wage offer after rejecting N62,000
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has reassured Nigerians and the organised labour that talks are in progress to secure an improved minimum wage.
This follows the rejection of the Federal Government’s proposal of N62,000 by the governors, who stated that some states would need to borrow in order to pay salaries.
On the other hand, the organised labour is pushing for a wage of N250,000.
Following an emergency meeting that went late into the night on Thursday, the NGF issued a statement indicating that they are committed to working with key stakeholders to find a mutually acceptable solution regarding the new national minimum wage.
The meeting also addressed the World Bank-Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up, which was presented by the Minister of Women Affairs.

The governors highlighted the importance of carrying out the project at the state level, as originally intended, since states are the primary entities responsible for the project.
The statement reads, “The Forum was briefed by the Minister of Women Affairs on the World Bank-Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up, as well as other activities of the ministry.
“Members recognised the significance of the project and stressed the necessity of implementing it at the state level as originally planned, given that the states are the main parties involved in the project.
The statement further states, “The governors appreciate the efforts and contributions of the Ministry of Women Affairs in promoting gender equality, empowering women, and advancing social development throughout Nigeria.
The Forum deliberated on the new National Minimum Wage and agreed to persist in engaging with key stakeholders to find a solution that all parties can agree on.
“We are committed to the process and are confident that positive outcomes will come from the ongoing negotiations,” the statement said.
