Historic Chess Match: Tunde Onakoya to face Nigeria’s no.1 chess prodigy, Deborah Quickpen

In a groundbreaking event organised by Daniel Ford International (U.K), the Nigerian chess community is buzzing with anticipation as Guinness World Record holder and Chess In Slums Africa (CISA) founder, Tunde Onakoya, will go head-to-head with National Women’s Chess Champion and chess prodigy, Deborah Quickpen.

The upcoming match is not just about the game itself but also about raising awareness for chess in Nigeria.

It aims to shine a spotlight on the power of this mind sport as a catalyst for change while also generating crucial funds to support the impactful work of Chess In Slums charity and contribute towards Deborah Quickpen’s promising chess career.

Tunde Onakoya, renowned for his remarkable achievements in the global chess community and his commitment to apply chess to empower children from underserved communities. His internationally acclaimed Chess In Slums project has provided children across Africa with educational opportunities and life skills.

Deborah Quickpen, a rising star in African and world chess, has already made waves with her exceptional talent and achievements at such a young age. Deborah is currently ranked number 1 in Nigeria and No 4 in Africa across all female age groups. She is the current Nigeria National Women’s Chess Champion, the youngest person to hold that title in Nigerian chess history. Deborah’s journey in chess has been nothing short of inspiring, and her participation in this match symbolizes the bright future of Nigerian chess.

This match event will be held on June 11, 2024, in Lagos, with proceeds directed towards expanding the reach and impact of Chess in Nigeria.

Date and Time: June 11, 2024, from 3pm – 6 P.M
Games: Four (4) Rapid (10 minutes + 5 seconds increments from move 1) games and Four (4) Blitz games (3 minutes + 2 seconds increments from move 1)
Venue: CentrePoint, Ikoyi, Lagos (Entry is Strictly By Invitation)
Participants: Deborah Quickpen and Tunde Onakoya
Purpose: To raise awareness for chess in Nigeria; raise funds for Chess In Slums Africa; promote education and empowerment through chess and support the chess development of Deborah Quickpen.

This event will feature live streaming of the games, allowing chess enthusiasts and supporters from around the globe to witness the match.
