Nasarawa State launches free hepatitis testing, treatment campaign

The Nasarawa State Government, in partnership with the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, has launched a comprehensive campaign to test and treat residents for Hepatitis B and C across the state’s 13 local government areas.

Acting Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe announced the initiative on Friday in Doma LGA during the flag-off of the Viral Hepatitis Free Village Campaign, titled “Putting Nasarawa State on the Track of Viral Hepatitis Elimination By 2030.” The campaign aims to provide extensive healthcare services in rural communities.

Akabe emphasized the high prevalence of viral hepatitis in Doma, which influenced the decision to start the program there. He urged residents to participate in the testing and adhere to safe practices to prevent infection, such as avoiding unsterilized sharp objects and sharing needles.

Health Commissioner Dr. Gaza Gwamna highlighted the support from the federal government and other partners, noting the goal to reach 6,000 individuals in each LGA. The event featured the presentation of a Volkswagen Sharon Bus to the medical team.

In March 2023, the state allocated N100 million to combat the spread of hepatitis, underscoring the ongoing efforts to address the health challenge.
