The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has busted a snake-guarded shrine in Benin City, Edo state, used for storing illicit drugs.
The raid, which took place on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, resulted in the arrest of two ladies, Sonia Chinonso Ezumezu and Risikatu Tijani, and the seizure of 8.743 kilograms of various illicit substances.
According to a statement by Femi Babafemi, NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, the shrine, located in the Igor community, was raided following an intelligence-led operation.
Upon arrival, operatives discovered a large hole storage in a wall, covered with wallpapers and fetish objects. The hole contained different quantities of methamphetamine, Loud, Colorado, and Arizona, all strong strains of cannabis.
The shrine was guarded by a big black snake, which was demobilized before the operatives could gain access to the storage hole.
The two arrested ladies, Sonia Chinonso Ezumezu and Risikatu Tijani, are currently being interrogated to uncover the details of their involvement in the illicit drug trade.

“This operation is a testament to our commitment to dismantling drug trafficking organizations and disrupting their supply chains,” said Femi Babafemi, NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy.
“We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our communities are safe from the harmful effects of illicit drugs.”
The seized drugs have a total weight of 8.743 kilograms, and the two arrested ladies are facing charges for drug trafficking and related offenses.
The NDLEA has vowed to continue its efforts to combat drug trafficking and rid Nigeria of illicit substances.
