Nigeria to receive over 50% of global water fund – ECOWAS
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced that Nigeria will receive at least 55 percent of the global water fund. This revelation was made by ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, and Digitisation, Sediko Douka, during the 5th ordinary session of the Ministerial Monitoring Committee (MMC) in Abuja.
The meeting focused on the coordination and monitoring of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).
Douka attributed Nigeria’s significant share of the fund to its large population and substantial contributions to the regional bloc’s levy.
He highlighted the longstanding commitment of West African states to integrated water management, which dates back to the action plan of 2000 and the framework established in 2001.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Terlumun Utsev, emphasized the importance of unity among member states to develop the water sector effectively.
He underscored the need for collaboration to tackle regional challenges such as climate change, poverty, unemployment, and inequality.

Key resolutions included promoting new transboundary basin organisations, structural reform, and capacity building of water resources management centers.
The session concluded with the 5th Ordinary Session of the Ministerial Monitoring Committee, which reviewed reports and recommendations, including the draft ECOWAS-WRMC Strategic Plan 2020-2030 and guidelines on the management of shared water resources in West Africa.
The meeting aimed to enhance regional cooperation and ensure sustainable water resource management in the sub-region.
