NIMC denies allegation of data breach
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has denied allegations of a data breach. Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, clarified in a statement on Saturday that Nigerians’ data have not been compromised despite reports suggesting otherwise.
Recent reports alleged that some websites were offering to sell Nigerian citizens’ data. However, the Commission assured the public that it has not authorised any website or entity to sell or misuse the National Identification Number (NIN) or any other identities.
“The following websites: idfinder.com.ng; Verify.ng/signin, championtech.com.ng, trustyonline.com, and anyverify.com are data harvesters not authorised by NIMC to access or manage sensitive data,” the statement read. “NIMC urges the public to disregard any claims or services these websites offer and should not provide their data, as they are potentially fraudulent.”
NIMC emphasized that it has implemented robust measures to safeguard the nation’s database from cyber threats, maintaining a secure, world-class database compliant with the ISO 27001:2013 Information Security Management System Standard and the Nigerian Data Protection Law.

The Commission advised Nigerians to avoid giving their data to unauthorised and phishing sites, which pose the danger of data harvesting and compromising individual data.
It reaffirmed its commitment to upholding ethical standards in data protection and warned that licensed partners or vendors are not authorised to scan or store NIN slips but to verify NINs through approved channels.
NIMC is working with security operatives to apprehend individuals posing as online vendors and ensure they face legal consequences.
The Commission urged the public to remain vigilant against false information and rely on verified sources for accurate updates.
The statement concluded, “NIMC remains committed to providing secure and reliable identity management and upholding the highest level of security for systems and databases, which are critical national assets.”
