NPFL: Bendel Insurance aims to derail Rangers’ quest for glory
As the 2023/2024 Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) season approaches its thrilling conclusion, Enugu Rangers are poised at the top of the table, holding a slim advantage over their closest rivals, Remo Stars and Enyimba. With just two matches left, the competition for the title is intense.
Rangers, currently leading the league, will host Bendel Insurance at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, known as the Cathedral, in Enugu on Sunday.
This match is crucial for Rangers, a seven-time league champion, to keep alive their hopes of securing an eighth title, the first since 2016.
Rangers’ recent form has been marred by controversy. They managed to secure only three points from their last two matches, both of which were surrounded by disputes.

Their last home game against Enyimba ended in chaos when the Aba team abandoned the match after a last-minute penalty was awarded to Rangers.
This led the NPFL to award three goals and three points to Rangers and fine Enyimba ₦10 million. Rangers also received a ₦5 million fine for poor crowd management.
Midweek, Rangers faced another contentious match against Shooting Stars in Ibadan, losing 1-0. The referee’s failure to award a clear penalty to Rangers led to his indefinite suspension by the NFF referees committee.
Sunday’s match against Bendel Insurance promises to be challenging. Bendel Insurance has been in good form, securing four points from their last two games with a draw against Abia Warriors and a win over Rivers United.
A victory is essential for Rangers to maintain their lead, as anything less could allow Remo Stars, who face Sunshine Stars in Akure, to overtake them in the title race.
