Shari’a Court remands intending couple for stealing wedding gifts

Story from Aliyu ASKIRA, Kano

A Kano State Shari’a Court has remanded one Nura Musbahu and his fiancée, Fatima Lawal, for stealing wedding gifts (Kayan Lefe) belonging to his sister, Aisha.

In Hausa tradition, Kayan lefe entails a groom buying expensive gift items for his bride and formally having it presented to her by his family.

The sister, Aisha, dragged Nura and his wife-to-be to the Sharia court at Rijiyar Lemo in Fagge LGA to seek redress over the theft.

The two lovers were arraigned for stealing and accepting stolen items, they pleaded guilty to the crimes.

However, Fatima clarified that only two items were given to her, which she handed over to the court.

Khadi Danbaba thereafter ordered their remand at a correctional centre and directed that their parents appeared before the court.
