Sports Minister demands explanation for Super Eagles’ poor performances
Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has summoned the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to analyse the recent disappointing performances of the Super Eagles in the 2026 World Cup qualifying series.
The Super Eagles’ lackluster performance included a 1-1 draw against South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo and a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic in Abidjan during the last two Group C matches.
With only three points out of a possible twelve secured so far in the World Cup qualifiers, the Eagles are in a precarious position as they aim to qualify for the 2026 World Cup jointly hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Minister Enoh expressed his discontent with the recent results, highlighting the significant support provided by President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the collaborative efforts between the ministry and the NFF.

In a formal statement, Enoh stated, “The recent results are unacceptable. Despite the backing from President Tinubu and the expectations of Nigerian football enthusiasts, the Super Eagles have fallen short.”
The minister demanded a comprehensive technical report from the NFF to analyze the reasons for the team’s underperformance and potential consequences for not meeting expectations.
Emphasizing the accountability owed to Nigerian football fans, Enoh stressed that transparency and clarity are vital in addressing the concerns surrounding the Super Eagles’ performance.
As the Eagles currently sit in fifth place, with Benin Republic rising to the top of the table, the scrutiny on the NFF and the Super Eagles intensifies, calling for action and explanation in the midst of heightened expectations and dreams of World Cup qualification.
