Super Eagles slip down 8 places in FIFA rankings after disappointing World Cup Qualifiers

The latest FIFA rankings reveal a significant drop for the Super Eagles, who have fallen eight places to 38th globally following their underwhelming performance in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

Nigeria suffered a surprising defeat to Benin Republic and managed only a draw against South Africa in their quest to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, leaving their chances of making it to the competition uncertain.

In the continental rankings, the Super Eagles now sit in 5th place in Africa, slipping two positions down the ladder. Meanwhile, Morocco has climbed to the top spot in Africa, securing the 12th position globally, followed by Senegal (18th), Egypt (36th), and Cote d’Ivoire (37th).

The top five positions globally are currently held by Argentina, France, Belgium, Brazil, and England.

With just three points from four games, the Super Eagles are lagging behind in the Group C race, trailing leaders Rwanda by four points.

In response to the disappointing results, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced plans to bring on a technical adviser for the team. However, the recent resignation of head coach Finidi George, amidst reported conflicts with star player Victor Osimhen, has added further turmoil to the team.

As preparations continue for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers later in the year, the NFF is yet to address Finidi’s resignation or address Osimhen’s comments, setting the stage for a challenging period ahead for the Super Eagles.
