President Bola Tinubu has expanded the membership of the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions.
Originally announced on May 19, 2024, with 26 members, the committee now includes representatives from the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Foreign Affairs, Petroleum Resources (Gas), Innovation, Science & Technology, and NNPCL.
Additionally, Special Assistant to the President on Energy Transition, Ms. Yasmin Mohammed, and a representative from the Energy Transition Office, Mr. Somkele Awa-Kalu, have been appointed. The committee will be inaugurated in July.
The expansion aims to bolster Nigeria’s commitment to the United Nations’ Green Economic Programme, focusing on low-carbon development and green sectors.
President Tinubu emphasized the importance of diligence, dedication, and patriotism in fulfilling the committee’s mandate to achieve green industrial growth and sustainable development for Nigeria and Africa.
Moreover, to clarify the functions of the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action, President Tinubu has approved specific terms of reference.

The office will lead negotiations on climate-related matters, coordinate national and international climate activities, and engage with key federal entities and global organisations to advance Nigeria’s climate goals.
The president’s directive also establishes the office as the focal authority for all climate-related engagements, ensuring alignment with Nigeria’s national interest and international climate commitments.
