Traders protest as Kano gov’t demolishes hundreds of market stalls

Story from Usman UMAR

The Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA) has demolished numerous stalls owned by traders at the Kano Main Id Ground (Masallachin Idi) along IBB Way in the city centre.

The demolition was carried out using heavy earth-moving machinery and faced protests from outraged traders affected by the action.

This occurred after the 48-hour ultimatum given to the stall owners expired, during which the authority accused them of unlawfully occupying the area.

Nearly all the stalls were cleared from the location, exposing the walls of the Id ground that were previously concealed by the market stalls.

Many of the impacted traders remained present as their stalls were being torn down, expressing helplessness at the situation.

Some of them informed the media that they had utilised the market space for 18 years and had no alternative place to move to.

The demolition took place just four days before the Id-el-Kabir celebrations, a time when numerous customers, both local and from outside the state, traditionally visit the markets for the upcoming Sallah festival.
