In an effort to enhance fan experience and understanding, UEFA has announced that at Euro 2024, spectators will receive comprehensive explanations of Video Assisted Refereeing decisions through stadium speakers.
UEFA’s refereeing committee head, Roberto Rosetti, revealed that giant screens in stadiums across Germany will display detailed technical explanations of VAR calls to help fans grasp the reasoning behind crucial decisions during matches.
Addressing concerns over fans struggling to comprehend VAR verdicts, Rosetti emphasized the importance of clarity and transparency.
He stated, “Following video assistance, fans will be able to see the technical explanation of the decision on the stadium screens.”
Providing an example, Rosetti outlined a scenario where a handball penalty is awarded.
“Germany’s number nine was deemed to have touched the ball with his left hand above his shoulder, in an unnatural position away from his body,” he explained during a press conference at the Allianz Arena.

Drawing from the approach used in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where decisions were verbally communicated to spectators before play resumed, Rosetti mentioned that referees will offer explanations to team captains.
However, players disputing rulings or seeking additional information could face disciplinary action.
The initiative is to enhance transparency across all three UEFA club competition finales, resulting in caution cards being issued for dissent.
Rosetti emphasized the long-term benefits of such measures, stating, “This is for the future generations, for the integrity of football, for young players, and for budding referees.”
For teams captained by goalkeepers like Italy and Slovenia, an outfield player will be designated to engage with referees on decisions during Euro 2024 matches, ensuring effective communication on the pitch.
