World record holder Amusan obtains 4th national title at AFN Trials

Tobi Amusan, the reigning world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, has secured her fourth Nigerian title at the ongoing AFN National Trials at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin-City, Edo State.

Running a swift race in 12.78s, Amusan crossed the finish line ahead of Adaobi Tabugbo, who came in second at 13.33s.

The AFN Trials, culminating on Tuesday, will serve as a crucial event in selecting athletes for the upcoming Paris Olympics, the Africa Championships in Cameroon later this month, and the World U-20 Championship in Lima, Peru from August 27 to 31.

While already qualified for the Olympics, Amusan exhibited top form in Benin-City, successfully defending her title.

With outstanding performances this season, such as setting a world lead at the Jamaican Invitational in May and breaking the African 60m hurdles (indoor) record twice at the start of the year, Amusan eyes a podium finish in Paris during the Games from July 26 to August 11, 2024.

Despite not making it past the heats in Rio 2016 and narrowly missing the podium in Tokyo 2020, she remained focused and undeterred.

Speaking at the Atlanta City Games in May, Amusan shared, “No pressure, just having fun. One day at a time, one race at a time, no pressure on. When it’s time for Paris, we’ll definitely show up in Paris.”
