CBN sacks Aisha Buhari’s brother, appoints Sule Minjibir as new boss for the mint

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has taken decisive action by dismissing the top management team of the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc (NSPM), known as the mint, and appointing Abubakar Sule Minjibir as the acting Managing Director.

This move follows widespread controversy surrounding the former MD& CEO, Ahmed Halilu, who was allegedly appointed due to familial ties with Aisha Buhari, wife of former President Muhammad Buhari.

According to an internal memo titled “House Notice No. 2083 – Executive Management Changes” signed by Soji Ogungbesan, General Manager of Corporate Services at NSPM, the CBN’s decision aims to restore operational integrity and public trust in the mint. The memo announced the immediate dissolution of the current executive management team and the installation of an interim team led by Abubakar Sule Minjibir, along with Mohammed Mustapha as GM of Finance and Strategy, and Adesoji Ogungbesan as GM of Corporate Services.

The appointment of Ahmed Halilu had sparked outcry, with critics alleging nepotism and expressing concerns over the potential compromise of sensitive operations at the mint. The Gravitas Group, an international advocacy organisation, previously condemned the appointment as familial favoritism that undermined institutional credibility.

In response to these developments, the new interim management team has assured NSPM staff of its commitment to organisational transformation and strategic initiatives outlined by the board.

Employees have been encouraged to collaborate with the new leadership to achieve these objectives, ensuring continuity and efficiency in service delivery.
