“My husband neglects me but bandits pay me 30,000 for sex” – Married woman confesses

Story from Ayuba AHMAD, Aliyu ASKIRA

In a bizarre, stranger-than-fiction revelation, a woman, a married woman, made the following statement of confession to the police:

“The bandits paid me between 30,000 and 50,000 naira for a round of sex. I helped them do their shopping to prevent them from arrest.

“I knew they were into kidnapping, banditry and armed robbery, but I decided to date one of them despite my married status because my husband was not taking care of me as his wife but this my boyfriend takes care of me and gives me lots of money”

Maryam Abubakar, 39 years old, from Giwa, Zaria in Kaduna state, further made even more heart-rending, startling revelations, thus:

.”One day, some bandits said I should introduce more girls to them so I brought two girls and they were given 50, 000 naira per night, I felt my 15 year old and 17 year old daughters can also benefit so I introduced them to the Bandits and they were given lots of money. As such, some of the burdens I have, like feeding them and clothing them reduced on me.”

The amazing story of Maryam Abubakar simply a portrayal of the high level of decadence and despoliation that has enveloped the society. Tellingly, this particular story came from a part of the north, where such would have been so rare and unheard of.

Just imagine a married woman in a conservative setting entrenched in the custom, mores and moral values of Islam, going out of her way, discarding the restraining grips of her faith and indulge in the heinous practice of adultery!

Not only did Maryam shutdown her conscience and fear of Allah by engaging in the sinful act of adultery, she went further on the path of waywardness by pimping, soliciting and supplying young girls to criminals she very well knew to be the dreaded tormentors of her community: bandits, armed robbers and kidnappers. For the material lucre of it, she went further by introducing two of her own biological daughters, aged fifteen and seventeen, into the putative business.

The kind of the tale of Maryam Abubakar is, sadly, fast becoming a common occurrence in the north of the country. Not long ago, 23rd June, 2024, a woman by name Aisha Abubakar was arrested in Katsina state with a large cache of ammunition.

On interrogation, the middle-aged woman confessed she was given the deadly consignment in Nasarawa state for delivery to bandits at Yantumaki in Dutsinma local government area of Katsina state. Like Maryam, Aisha told interrogators that, while she knew that the ammunition would be used for criminal activities, she was however, forced by the pangs of poverty to overlook that blood chilling fact.

This is coming in the wake of the recent incident of multiple suicide bombings, in Gwoza, Borno state. By the end of the day, when the dust had settled, it was discovered that almost all the suicide bombers were women!

The intriguing increase in the rate of involvement of northern women in heinous crimes has been variously explained. There is the opinion that, perceives the scenario in the context of the emerging changes in the socio-economic dynamics of the region. Escalation in the rate of crimes in any society, is usually, a reflection of the phenomenon of pervading poverty.

By all standards of measurement of the indices of development, the north has always been classified as lagging behind the rest of the country. Consequentially, poverty is therefore, most prevalent in the region. In the recent past, the downward trend in the nation’s economy has ushered in an unprecedented era of poverty among Nigerians generally. Again, as it is, Northerners are the most adversely affected by the scourge.

Universally, women are usually the worst affected in the event of any social and economic calamities in the society. Mostly illiterate and economically handicapped , women in the north of the country are simply the least prepared to cope with the vagaries of the prevailing bad economy.

The predicaments of northern women would also have been accentuated by the poverty- induced rise in the number of spinsters and divorcees. The high fatalities and dislocations due to the insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest and north central, have no doubt , contributed to the dearth of husbands and suitors and, as such, more number of women compelled to engage in fending for themselves, children, families and relatives.

Thus, the situation that has given birth to the large pool of northern women available to be manipulated, indoctrinated or, induced, usually with paltry sums of financial rewards, to accept to undertake ventures that they would have in the recent past, rejected out right.

Thus, the existence of the likes of Maryam Abubakar, Aisha Abubakar and unfortunate young ladies who, out of material and intellectual poverty choose the path of hell by means of suicide bombings. Instead of condemning them or, despising them, these women deserve our understanding and empathy. Because, they are the dialectical outcomes of our society. A dysfunctional society.

  1. Thank you for bringing this news to us. How revealing. I don’t blame the women. But we are all victims under the unrelenting shadow of perennial bad governance – a system that creates more problems than solutions for citizens.

We are seeing here at play the principle of cause and effect.

May God have mercy on these women and not count these sins against them. W
