2024 Paris Olympics: Nigeria Wrestling Federation unveils team

The Wrestling Federation of Nigeria (WFN) has introduced the six wrestlers chosen to represent the nation at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.

A team consisting of five female wrestlers, one male freestyle wrestler, and three coaches was unveiled at a ceremony held at the Dynamite Wrestling gym in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Among the wrestlers are the Olympics silver medalist Blessing Oborodudu (68kg), reigning African champion Odunayo Adekuoroye (57kg), and Military world champion Hannah Reuben (76kg).

Additionally, there are reigning African champions and debutants Esther Kolawole (62kg) and Ogunsanya Christinah (53kg), along with Ashton Mutuwa in the men’s freestyle category (125kg).

The coaching team includes Victor Kodei, Purity Akuh, and Happiness Burutu, who will guide the wrestlers in their journey to the Olympics.

President of Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, expressed optimism that the wrestlers will deliver impressive performances at the upcoming Olympics.

He emphasised the federation’s commitment to competing for medals, not just for participation.

Furthermore, Igali appreciated the support from various stakeholders, including Governor Douye Diri, Nigeria Olympic Committee President Engineer Habu Gumel, Minister of Sports Development Senator John Enoch, and others for their unwavering support towards wrestling in Nigeria.

The athletes and officials are set to depart for Spain on Wednesday for a pre-Olympic tournament in Madrid before heading to Germany for their final training camp before the start of the games.
