Court prohibits Ado Bayero from parading as Kano Emir

Story from Aliyu ASKIRA, Kano

The Kano State High Court issued a permanent injunction on Monday, restraining the former Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and four other deposed Emirs from parading themselves as Emirs.

Presided over by Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, the ruling effectively prohibits them and their appointees from claiming the titles or performing the duties of the emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye.

It could be recalled that the Kano State Government had previously filed a lawsuit with the State High Court, seeking an injunction to prevent Bayero and the four other deposed Emirs from claiming the title of Emir or exercising any powers associated with it.

The government additionally issued an ultimatum to the deposed emirs, ordering them to vacate their palaces within 48 hours of their removal from office.

In her ruling, Justice Aliyu clarified that the matter of evicting the deposed Emir, Bayero, from his Nassarawa residence is a dispute for the rent tribunal to resolve and is not within the jurisdiction of the current court proceedings.

The judge ordered the deposed Emir and four other former Emirs to immediately surrender all traditional royal artefacts and regalia associated with the Emirate to the state government and the current Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, without delay.

Aliyu also said that the State Assembly Emirate Council Repeal Law 2024 was done according to the law as enshrined in Section 4 of the Constitution.

Furthermore, the judge declared that the state governor, Mr. Abba Yusuf, had properly signed the bill into law, in full compliance with the constitutional requirements and procedures.
