France probes death threats against Israeli Olympic athletes

France has launched an investigation into death threats made against three Israeli athletes. The threats, conveyed via email to the Israeli Olympic delegation, were reported by Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.

The Paris prosecutor’s office announced the investigation will be led by the national anti-online hate body.

A source close to the case mentioned that no connections have been found between this incident and any foreign countries, including Iran.

Furthermore, there is no link between these threats and the recent illegal leak of Israeli athletes’ private data on social media.

In light of potential threats from Iran-backed groups, Israel had previously alerted France about possible dangers to its athletes and tourists during the Paris Games.

Consequently, French police have been providing round-the-clock security to Israeli athletes, both within the Athletes’ Village and during their travel to Olympic venues.

The French government has implemented an extensive security operation for the Paris 2024 Olympics, involving around 18,000 troops in addition to regular police forces.

This operation commenced on Friday and will continue until August 11.
