Gov. Buni directs security agents to arrest consumers of illicit drugs, traffickers

Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, has on Wednesday, directed security operatives in the state to arrest person(s) or groups involved in trafficking, trading and consumption of all prohibited substances and drugs.
The Governor made the directive on Wednesday during the official launching of ethical re-orientation campaign (Operation Gyaran Hali) in the state.
The campaign, which was organised by the Yobe State Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ethical Re-orientation (MORAER), aimed at inducing positive attitudinal change in the society.
Buni reassured that the state government would support the security agencies and all other stakeholders in the fight against the increasingly ugly scourge of drug addiction and trafficking.
He called on the security chiefs to embark on thorough in-house cleaning to ensure that, while their men are actively engaged in the new war against drugs, the programme is not sabotaged by some few suspicious characters.

He said the launching of the ethical re-orientation programme is indeed timely, considering the decay and rot in moral values, and the decadence in cultural and religious ethics in the society, especially among young people.
Governor Buni revealed that, traditionally, since the days of the old Kanem Bornu Empire and, with the influence of Islam, societies and communities were reputable in honesty, faithfulness and integrity among others, but sadly according to him, these moral virtues continue to degenerate over time.
According to Buni, the increasing consumption of illicit substances, especially drugs is quite worrisome and calls for immediate and strategic action to stem the growing tide to save the communities, state and country.
“It therefore becomes imminent for all stakeholders, including the government, traditional rulers, religious leaders, parents and guardians to join hands with the security agencies in the war against illicit substances and drugs.
“Most crimes are tied to drug consumption, therefore, parents should expose their wards engaged in drug related activities rather than shield them for us to have a sane and productive youths and future.
“As custodians of tradition and moral values, the traditional institutions are hereby directed to intensify sensitisation programmes, and the government’s renewed war against drug related offences,” said Governor Buni.
