Gov Buni hails student’s achievement, rewards teachers

Governor Mai Mala Buni praised the remarkable achievement of Haruna, a student from a frequently underrated public school, who secured second place in the Yobe Spelling Bee competition.

Haruna outperformed 141 participants, including 61 from private schools, showcasing the impact of investments in public schools.

Officials highlighted Haruna’s success as evidence of the positive outcomes resulting from increased funding and improved management in public education.

They expressed optimism that continued investments will lead to more students like Haruna excelling in the future.

A key element of Haruna’s achievement was his preparation under the guidance of a young volunteer teacher, compensated by the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).

Recognising her dedication, officials, including Dr. Mohammed Goje, recommended to Governor Buni that she be added to the LEA Potiskum payroll. Governor Buni responded by immediately authorising her appointment.

In a conversation with the newly appointed teacher, she shared that some of her volunteer friends had mocked her efforts, questioning why she would spend days training a student.

However, her commitment proved worthwhile, and the governor rewarded all the teachers behind the top three winners with 500,000 Naira each.

“God is wonderful indeed,” remarked Abubakar M. Kareto, Lead Judge of the 2nd Yobe Spelling Bee Competition.
