INEC can conduct all local government elections – Yakubu tells NASS
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu has affirmed that the electoral body is well-equipped to conduct local government elections across Nigeria, pending legal authorisation.
This declaration came shortly after the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to local governments.
Yakubu made this assertion during his appearance before the Joint National Assembly Committee on Electoral Matters, where he presented the budget for the upcoming off-cycle elections in Ondo and Edo on Thursday.
Despite expressing confidence in INEC’s abilities, he highlighted the ongoing concern regarding funding for by-elections.

Yakubu pointed out that the commission already manages seamless elections in the 62 wards of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and is ready to implement the same across all 774 local government areas with necessary amendments to electoral laws.
Looking ahead to the Edo governorship election set for September 21, 2024, and the Ondo governorship election scheduled for November 16, 2024, Yakubu urged citizens to recognise the significant technological advancements achieved by INEC.
He dismissed concerns over the previous malfunctions of the Result Viewing (IReV) portal during the 2023 presidential election, assuring that valuable lessons have been learned.
Yakubu also confirmed that funding for the upcoming by-elections is not a concern, as the executive branch has committed to providing the necessary resources.
Additionally, he called on lawmakers to expedite the passage of the Electoral Offenders Bill, which would empower INEC to effectively investigate electoral misconduct and enhance the integrity of the electoral process.
