Meta lifts restrictions on Trump’s Facebook, Instagram accounts
Meta announced on Friday the lifting of restrictions on former President Donald
Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, marking a significant development in social media policy ahead of the upcoming presidential race.
Initially suspended indefinitely following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, Trump’s accounts were reinstated in February 2023 with heightened penalties. Now, Meta has removed these penalties, citing the need for equitable treatment of presidential candidates under its community standards.
“In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for President on the same basis,” Meta stated in a blog post.

Despite the lifting of penalties, Trump’s accounts remain subject to standard content policies, including guidelines against hate speech and incitement to violence.
Trump, who remains a prominent figure in American politics, also engages with supporters through his platform, Truth Social, where he shares updates, rally invitations, and campaign videos.
