NBTE to stop physical accreditation of institutions in August
In a significant move towards modernisation, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has announced its transition to a completely digital platform for all quality assurance processes, starting August 2024.
This shift aligns with the Federal Government’s digital-driven policies and the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Effective next month, the NBTE will cease physical accreditation and other quality assurance activities for institutions under its supervision. This development marks a major step in the board’s efforts to streamline and enhance the efficiency, transparency, and cost-effectiveness of its operations.
The NBTE, responsible for supervising, regulating, and overseeing educational programs in technical institutions at secondary, polytechnic, and monotechnic levels in Nigeria, has seen substantial success with its digitalisation policy. According to a statement released by the Head of Media Unit, Fatima Abubakar, in Kaduna, 489 institutions and stakeholders are now engaged with the digital system.
The board has completed digital assessments and documentation processes for 17 institutions across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones, with approvals granted accordingly. The digital monitoring system introduced by the NBTE ensures strict compliance with established standards.
Led by Executive Secretary Prof. Idris Bugaje, the NBTE’s digitalization drive aims to provide more efficient and effective quality assurance processes. The transition is expected to significantly enhance the quality of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in Nigeria, aligning them with global best practices.

In its 197th Executive Committee meeting held on July 18, 2024, the NBTE acknowledged the tremendous progress made in implementing its digitalization policy. The board highlighted the substantial increase in digital activities and the successes recorded so far.
As the NBTE encourages all polytechnics, technical institutions, and relevant stakeholders to embrace these technology-driven processes, the move is anticipated to foster a more transparent and cost-effective quality assurance exercise, ensuring the integrity of Nigeria’s technical education system.
