Outrage as Nigerian lawmaker gifts daughter SUV for graduating from secondary school
A member of the House of Representatives from Plateau State, Yusuf Gagdi, has come under heavy criticism for gifting his daughter, Aisha, a new Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) following her graduation from secondary school.
Reports surfaced online revealing that Gagdi presented his daughter, who graduated from the Lead British International School, Abuja, with the luxurious vehicle.
This gesture was reportedly in recognition of her stellar performance in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).
On Saturday, Gagdi shared photos from the graduation ceremony on Instagram, expressing his pride: “Today, I attended my amazing daughter’s graduation ceremony.

Watching you, my dear daughter, walk across that stage fills my heart with immense pride and love. I celebrate your achievements and the strength you’ve shown. Here’s to a future filled with endless possibilities and happiness.”
However, the gift has sparked significant backlash from Nigerians, who criticize the lawmaker for flaunting wealth amidst the country’s severe economic challenges.
Several users on X (formerly Twitter) reacted strongly:
@hurabaibrahim questioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the need to investigate the source of Gagdi’s funds, noting that even affluent businessmen do not exhibit such ostentation.
@RukayyaBauchi remarked on the lucrative nature of Nigerian politics, highlighting the disparity between the lavish gift and the economic hardship faced by many Nigerians.
@johnway11145073 expressed skepticism about Gagdi’s future political prospects, suggesting that his actions may alienate his constituents
@kingsley1463388 cynically predicted that even grander gifts might follow in the future, reflecting a lack of concern for the broader societal issues.
@OMOONABANJOX condemned the display of wealth, criticizing public officials for prioritising personal extravagance over addressing the needs of the impoverished masses.
