Senate proposes bill to establish LG electoral commission
A bill seeking to establish a federal agency for the conduct of local government elections on Thursday, July 18, scaled first reading in the Senate.
The bill is titled, “Local Government Independent Electoral Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2024 (SB. 531)”
The bill was sponsored by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Sani Musa (APC, Niger East).

It could be recalled that on Thursday, July 11, 2024, the Supreme Court granted full autonomy to local governments.
The apex court directed that allocations from the Federation Account to local governments should be paid directly to LGs.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Emmanuel Agim declared that it is unconstitutional for governors to withhold funds meant for local government administrations.
The case was instituted by the Federal Government and filed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).
