Tinubu approves management unit for health investment initiative

President Bola Tinubu has approved the creation of the Sector-wide Coordinating Office-Programme Management Unit (SCO-PMU) within the Office of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare.

This unit is established to ensure the efficient, transparent, and accountable management of external grants for the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII).

A statement from Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), confirmed the development on Friday. The SCO-PMU will report to a Steering Committee chaired by the Health Minister and include the Minister of State, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, and relevant development partners.

The unit will serve as the secretariat and delivery unit for the NHSRII, managing programme implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and fiduciary responsibilities. Dr. Muntaqa Umar Sadiq has been appointed as the National Coordinator for the SCO-PMU. Dr. Sadiq brings over 17 years of experience in public health, investment banking, and climate financing.

He holds degrees from Imperial College London, the University of Cambridge, and is a doctoral candidate at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

The NHSRII, launched on December 12, 2023, aims to improve health outcomes and human capital in Nigeria, with $2.2 billion mobilised from development partners to support its implementation.
