Zelensky brushes off Biden’s Putin Gaffe as a ‘Mistake’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed US President Joe Biden’s gaffe, where Biden mistakenly introduced him as Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling it a “mistake” that can be forgiven.

Speaking at Shannon Airport in Ireland, Zelensky emphasized the significant support the United States has provided to Ukraine and suggested that occasional errors are understandable.

The gaffe occurred during a NATO summit marking the alliance’s 75th anniversary. Biden, 81, announced a NATO-Ukraine compact but mistakenly referred to Zelensky as Putin.

Biden quickly corrected himself, stating, “President Putin! He’s going to beat President Putin. President Zelensky — I’m so focused on beating Putin we gotta worry about it. Anyway, Mr. President.”

Zelensky, arriving in Ireland for his first bilateral meeting on Irish soil with Irish leader Simon Harris, downplayed the mistake.

He expressed gratitude for Ireland’s support for Ukrainian refugees and its stance from the beginning of the Russian invasion.

Harris is expected to reiterate Ireland’s support for Ukraine’s EU membership bid during their talks.

Despite the gaffe, Biden remains committed to running for another term in November.

The incident has fueled discussions about his age and mental sharpness, but Zelensky’s forgiving response underscores the strong support and collaboration between the US and Ukraine.
