Bauchi Governor orders probe into alleged abuse of disabled protesters

Story from Ahmad SAKA, Bauchi

People Living with Disabilities (PWDs) joined the hunger protest last Thursday, seeking government attention as the country’s hardships affect them too.

Despite their peaceful march to avoid mistreatment due to their physical challenges, the PWDs were barred from accessing the Governor’s Office to present their concerns to Deputy Governor Rt Hon Muhammad Auwal Jatau.

A PWD spokesperson expressed that many of them are unemployed graduates with no hope of a better future, necessitating government intervention.

They alleged mistreatment by security personnel who nearly brutalized them despite their peaceful intentions.

In response, the Bauchi State Government issued a statement titled “Incident Involving a Person With Disability at a Cordoned Area in the Bauchi Gov’t House: Governor Bala Orders a Thorough Investigation,” by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Mukhtar Gidado.

Gidado stated that the Bauchi State Government is deeply concerned by the incident, emphasizing that Governor Bala Mohammed does not condone any violence or misconduct by law enforcement officers.

He assured a thorough investigation and accountability for any officers found to have acted improperly.

The statement reaffirmed Governor Bala Mohammed’s commitment to justice, fairness, and respect for human rights, urging the public to remain calm and follow regulations during and after the demonstration.
