Anyaoku-led group urges Tinubu to establish new constitution drafting committee

Former Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently convene a National Constituent Assembly to draft a new constitution for Nigeria. Anyaoku, who also chairs the Patriots, made this appeal during a recent meeting with the President at the State House in Abuja.

In his proposal, Anyaoku recommended that the National Constituent Assembly consist of representatives elected on a non-party basis—three from each of Nigeria’s 36 states and one from the Federal Capital Territory.

This assembly would be tasked with drafting a new constitution to be subjected to a national referendum, as current laws do not provide for such a process.

“We urged Mr. President to send an executive bill to the National Assembly calling for the establishment of this assembly,” Anyaoku said. “This measure is crucial to address the current crisis and ongoing protests across the country.”

Additionally, Anyaoku advised that the government engage in dialogue with protest leaders and ensure that law enforcement agencies avoid the use of lethal force, to prevent casualties and maintain peace during the protests.
