41 Palestinians injured in Gaza war flown to Malaysia for treatment
Forty-one Palestinian civilians who sustained various injuries during the ongoing war in Gaza were transported to Malaysia on Friday for medical treatment, according to officials.
These Palestinians, aged between eight months and 62 years, were flown from Cairo, Egypt, to Malaysia on two Malaysian air force transport aircraft. The majority Muslim nation has shown solidarity with the Palestinian cause by providing this humanitarian assistance.
Malaysian Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin, speaking at a news conference after receiving the patients, emphasized that the mission was conducted solely on humanitarian grounds and to express Malaysia’s stance against the “inhumane genocide” occurring in Palestine.
“We carried out this mission purely on humanitarian considerations, and to show our solidarity against what is happening to the people of Palestine,” Nordin stated. “It also shows our nation’s stand against this inhumane genocide.”
The minister noted that the injured were selected after a careful evaluation process to ensure they were fit for the 19-hour flight, which included a stopover in Karachi, Pakistan. The patients were accompanied by 86 family members or next of kin.
The Gaza conflict, which escalated following Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, has resulted in significant casualties and displacement.
According to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures, the attack led to the deaths of 1,198 people, mostly civilians, and the abduction of 251 hostages, 111 of whom are still held in Gaza, including 39 the Israeli military believes to be dead.
The war has caused widespread devastation in Gaza, displacing nearly the entire population and destroying much of the region’s housing and infrastructure, leading to severe shortages of food and other necessities.
The Gaza health ministry reported on Thursday that more than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict, though it does not distinguish between civilian and militant casualties.
