86 lawyers, 1 academic, elevated to Senior Advocates of Nigeria

Story by Uji A. ILIYASU

The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC), under the chairmanship of His Lordship, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, at its 164th plenary session held on Thursday, has promoted 86 lawyers and one academic in Nigeria to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

On the list of the new senior advocates is Baba Dalah, who made history as the first lawyer from Yobe State to have achieved the feat.
Also Professor Ganiyu Oke, an academic, and Ekele Iheanacho, counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) made the list.

This was disclosed in a release signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the Legal Practitioners Previleges Committee, Hajia Hajo Sarki Bello, on 1 Aug. 2024, in Abuja, FCT.

LPPC is the sole body that is responsible for the appointment of lawyers to the rank of Senior Advocates of Nigeria. The council preserves the integrity of the legal profession.

According to the release, the elevation took place under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, at its 164th plenary session held on Thursday.

“The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is awarded as a mark of excellence to members of the legal profession who have distinguished themselves as advocates and academics,” the release reads in part.

The meeting considered five different petitions written against some of the applicants but dismissed them for lacking merit.

“The swearing-in ceremony of the 87 successful applicants is scheduled to take place on Monday, the 30th day of September 2024,” Hajiya Bello said in the release.

It is worthy of note that the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is equivalent to the rank of King’s Counsel in the United Kingdom, which is usually conferred on legal practitioners in Nigeria who have excelled in the practice for at least 10 years.

Among other things, a senior advocate stands a greater chance of being appointed as a judge.

Prior to their elevations, the general public was invited by the LPPC to comment on the integrity, reputation, and competence of the listed applicants.

LPPC however stated: “For the avoidance of doubt, the publication of the names of the shortlisted applicants is not an indication of their success in the process.”
