Amnesty slams police arrest of man who shared video of Gov’s wife’s party

An international human rights organization, Amnesty International, has accused the Sokoto State Government of orchestrating the arrest of social media user Shafi’u Umar Tureta.

In a statement, the group claimed that Tureta, who was apprehended by heavily armed police officers, had posted a viral video showcasing the “lavish and extravagant” birthday party of the governor’s wife.

Amnesty International alleged that there are plans to bring Tureta before a court, with the intention of securing an extended remand in prison. This, the group said, would provide time to fabricate false charges against him.

“Sokoto State Government must immediately and unconditionally release Shafi’u Umar Tureta. This surge in human rights violations by the Sokoto State Government is unacceptable and must end now.”

The group urged the government to prioritize addressing poverty, the issue of out-of-school children on the streets of Sokoto, and the rampant insecurity in the state.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state has also issued a statement demanding the immediate release of its members.
