D’Tigress coach, Rena Wakama urges investment in future after historic olympic run

Despite their exit from the Paris 2024 Olympics following a 88-74 loss to the USA, Nigeria’s D’Tigress made a significant impact, becoming the first African basketball team to reach the quarterfinals of the Games.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Rena Wakama stressed the importance of investing in the team’s future.

“The future is bright, but we need to invest in our players. They deserve better resources to help them achieve their full potential and bring home a medal,” Wakama said.

Wakama’s call for increased support comes in the wake of D’Tigress’s historic achievement. The team’s performance underscored their talent and potential, highlighting the need for continued investment to build on their success.

Notable performances by players like Ezinne Kalu, Amy Okonkwo, and Elizabeth Balogun, coupled with their AfroBasket victory earlier in the year, signal a promising future for the team. As Wakama emphasized, “We are capable of achieving great things.”

The challenge now lies with the Nigerian Sports Ministry and Basketball Federation to provide the necessary resources for the team’s continued success.
