Emir of Ningi, Yunusa Danyaya, passes away at 88
Bauchi State mourns the loss of a revered monarch, Alhaji Yunusa Muhammad Danyaya (OON), the Emir of Ningi, who passed away at the age of 88. The Emir reportedly died in the early hours of Sunday in Kano, where he had been receiving medical treatment for age-related health issues.
The announcement was made by the Secretary of the Emirate, Alhaji Usman Sule, Magayakin Ningi, in a statement written in Hausa. The statement reads, “Innalillahi Wa’innan Ilaihir Raji’un. Allah yayiwa mai Martaba Sarkin Ningi, Dr. Yunusa Muhammadu Dan Yaya (OON), rasuwa da asubahin yau, Lahadi a Kano. Za ayi jana’iza da karfe Hudu na yamma a kofar Fada.” This translates to: “Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. His Royal Highness, the Emir of Ningi, Dr. Yunusa Muhammadu Dan Yaya (OON), passed away this morning, Sunday, in Kano. The funeral prayer will be held at 4:00 PM at the Emir’s Palace.”

The late Emir will be laid to rest later on Sunday evening following the funeral prayer at his palace in Ningi.
Born in 1936, Alhaji Yunusa Danyaya ascended to the throne in 1978, marking a distinguished career both before and after becoming the Emir. His educational journey began at Ningi Elementary School from 1941 to 1946, followed by Bauchi Middle School, and later the School of Hygiene in Kano. He furthered his education at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he obtained a diploma in Public Administration.
Before his ascension, he served in various capacities within the Native Authority (NA), including as a dispenser at Nasaru Dispensary in Ningi. His roles in the NA included being a member of the Ningi Emirate Council, a counsellor for the Medical and Health Department, and a member of the NA Strong Room controllers, among others.
His career outside royalty saw him in roles such as Welfare Officer at the Nigerian Tobacco Company and Assistant Marketing Officer at the Northern Nigeria Marketing Board. His leadership skills were recognized, leading to his appointment as Sub-Area Manager for regions including Gombe, Biu, and Kumo.
As Emir, Danyaya was an active member of Jama’atu Nasrul Islam and served in various committees, including the National Council of States representing Bauchi State and the Vision 2010 committee. His legacy includes his significant contributions to the Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin Development Authority and the defunct Inland Bank Nigeria Plc.
