Floods devastate Yobe State, affect over 8,000 households (Pictures)

The recent floods in Yobe State have severely impacted over 8,000 households across 256 villages and communities.
Since the onset of the floods on August 16, 2024, the state has experienced widespread destruction, with mud houses either washed away or heavily damaged, resulting in significant displacement of residents.
Dr. Mohammed Goje, Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), reported that 23 public facilities have also been damaged by the floods.
Tragically, the disaster has resulted in 26 fatalities due to building collapses and drowning, with over 200 people injured and treated.
In response to the emergency, the Yobe State Government has initiated a comprehensive aid effort.
YOSEMA has begun distributing essential life-saving supplies, including non-food items (NFIs) and food items, to affected communities.
The agency is collaborating with local government leaders to provide temporary shelters, medical care, and hygiene kits to prevent the spread of flood-related diseases.
The relief distribution includes food baskets, maize, cooking oil, macaroni, pasta, mosquito nets, blankets, poly mats, slippers, torch lights, soap, sanitary pads, kettles, and other essential items, which have been sent to various camps in Nguru.
Dr. Goje expressed appreciation for the support received from philanthropists who have contributed both financially and in kind.

YOSEMA is also working with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), as well as United Nations agencies and international non-governmental organisations, to assess ongoing needs and coordinate further response efforts.
The public has been advised to report any incidents and stay vigilant, with red-flagged areas urged to relocate.
YOSEMA and the Yobe State Government acknowledge the efforts of volunteers in aiding the flood response and will continue to provide updates on the situation and relief activities.
