French cinema icon Alain Delon dies at 88

Legendary French actor Alain Delon has passed away at the age of 88. The actor, renowned for his iconic roles in classics such as “Purple Noon” (1960) and “Le Samurai” (1967), died peacefully at his home in Douchy, France, at around 3:00 am local time. His children, Alain Fabien, Anouchka, and Anthony, along with his dog Loubo, were by his side.

Delon’s death follows a period marked by public family disputes over his health. Last year, his children filed a complaint against his live-in assistant, Hiromi Rollin, accusing her of harassment. This dispute, coupled with Delon’s stroke in 2019, led to a tumultuous period for the actor, who had largely withdrawn from the public eye since the 1990s.

The French star’s last major public appearance was at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2019, where he received an honorary Palme d’Or. Reflecting on the award, Delon remarked, “It’s a bit of a posthumous tribute, but from my lifetime.”

Delon, known for his intense screen presence, was celebrated for his roles in 1960s cinema. He gained fame for his portrayal of enigmatic characters, including in “Purple Noon,” which was later remade as “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” and the iconic silent hitman in “Le Samurai.”

Though admired for his acting, Delon’s personal life attracted controversy. He faced criticism for his support of far-right politics and allegations of domestic violence, which he partially acknowledged but denied in full. Despite this, his contributions to cinema were widely recognised, influencing directors from Martin Scorsese to Quentin Tarantino.

Delon’s complex legacy is reflected in his on-screen performances and the mixed perceptions of his public persona. His profound impact on the film industry is remembered by fans and critics alike, celebrating his instinctive genius and charismatic screen presence.
