#IgboMustGo: We own this country together – Obasanjo

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has dismissed the recent claim about his alleged Igbo paternity, stating that such insinuations only make him laugh. He made these remarks while receiving the leadership of the Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association, an umbrella body representing major markets in Lagos State, at the boardroom of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Obasanjo did not dwell much on the issue of his paternity but simply responded, “It just makes me laugh.”

During the meeting, Obasanjo emphasized his belief that no one in Nigeria should be driven away from any part of the country, asserting, “We own this country together.” He recalled the unity that brought together the Yorubas, Igbos, and Hausas to fight for the unity of Nigeria during the civil war, stressing that the war was fought to keep Nigeria united, not to push any ethnic group away.

Obasanjo also discussed the group’s request for support in establishing the Owerri Central Market, which they aspire to make the best of its kind in the country. He acknowledged that the idea of the market has been in contemplation since the creation of Imo State but has yet to be realized. Obasanjo expressed his happiness that the project is being revived and noted that the governor of Imo State is showing the desired interest and understanding to make it happen.

Chief Emeka Dallas Emmanuel, the group’s spokesperson, delivered a letter jointly signed by Comrade Chinedu Ukatu and Evangelist Iwuchukwu Ezenwafor. Emmanuel highlighted that the market would be a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship and assured their commitment to contributing to the market’s growth and the nation’s economy.

Emmanuel further sought Obasanjo’s assistance in securing loans for their members to purchase shops and spaces at the market, expressing confidence that Obasanjo’s support would significantly aid the actualization of the international market capable of transforming lives and taking many off the streets.
