Kaduna electric disconnects Govt house after closure of Its office

The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has disconnected the Kaduna Government House due to an outstanding debt of N2.9 billion. The move follows a significant unpaid balance for electricity consumed over the past seven months.

According to Abdulazeez Abdullahi, Head of Corporate Communication at KEDCO, the debt accumulated from January to July 2024 totals N1.166 billion, contributing to the overall arrears. Despite a partial payment of N256 million made on May 9, 2024, the debt remains substantial.

Abdullahi stated, “Kaduna Electric’s decision to disconnect power was a last resort after extensive efforts to resolve the issue through consultations and reconciliations. The disconnection notice was issued on July 21, 2024, and received by the Office of the Governor the following day.”

The situation escalated after the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) sealed KEDCO’s offices earlier on Friday over N600 million in tax liabilities. Abdullahi emphasized that while KEDCO had made efforts to negotiate and resolve the issue with the state government, the failure to clear the debt left the company with no alternative.

He added, “The public and stakeholders are now waiting to see how the Kaduna State Government will address the arrears and restore power to affected government offices. This move underscores the urgent need for improved financial management and timely payments by government entities to prevent service disruptions.”
