An obvious consequence of the prevailing harsh economic condition in the country, the family of Malam Sadiq Badamasi of Panisau in Kano state, penultimate week, had a bitter taste of the tragedy of patronizing a dubious and a quack parading himself in a rural community as qualified medical personnel.

Investigations by correspondents of Neptune Prime revealed that it all began when Malam Badamasi took his three children to a nearby community health facility at Jaba manned by one Manir Mai Chemist in search of treatment for their running temperature. Two of the children were supposedly treated and asked to return home.

Manir Mai Chemist, however, advised that nine-year-old Rumaisa, the eldest of the three children, be left behind for admission in his ramshackle facility because, according to him, her own condition was “serious and needed detailed urgent medication.”

Unsuspecting Badamasi innocently left Rumaisa all alone in the care of the Manir, also popularly known as “Doctor” in the neighborhood, without any member of the family staying back to care for his daughter.

If Malam Badamasi had the confidence that he was leaving his daughter in the safe hands of a God-fearing and compassionate healthcare provider, he was later proved to be dead wrong.

As he was soon to dawn on him, he could have as well, left his beloved child in the care of the Devil himself! Because as it turned out, instead of nursing and caring for the child, the “Doctor” turned into a devouring, vicious, and cold-blooded Savage without a pinch of human feelings.

A few hours later, when he returned to check on his daughter, Malam Badamasi found Rumaisa in a deplorable condition, far worse than when he left her. She was half undressed, weak, gasping for breath and looking distant.

The unfeeling monster of a medical practitioner coldly recommended that, despite her condition, she should be taken home. According to him, the child was merely reacting to the injections she was given and that she would pull through after some rest.

Back at his home, Rumaisa, who was visibly dehydrated,d, was also restless and groaning as she kept complaining of pains in her stomach and legs. Suspecting that something very grievous might have occurred, Rumaisa’s mother decided to probe deeper.

True to her instincts, on undressing Rumaisa, the mother saw signs of bruises with blood profusely oozing out of her daughter’s private parts. Perplexed and horrified but, yet not suspecting any foul play on the part of Manir Mai Chemist, the child was rushed back to him.

Late Rumaisa Badamasi

Conscious of the gravity of the child’s condition or the havoc that he had inflicted on his victim, the self-acclaimed Doctor rejected Rumaisa outright and, instead, advised that she should be taken to any nearest hospital. The bleeding child was, not surprisingly, also rejected at the Primary healthcare center in the Ungogo local government area where she was first taken.

With the aid of a Lawyer and human rights activist, Barrister Badamasi Suleiman, the frantic efforts of the father of Rumaisa to obtain medical attention for his child, took him to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, AKTH. Not finding a positive response at the AKTH, Rumaisa was rushed to the Murtala Mohammed General Hospital, where she was accepted and admitted.

Doctors at the Murtala Muhammed Hospital desperately did the best they could to salvage the situation. But, alas, all the spirited efforts failed to save the young, fledging life of Rumaisa.

After a post-mortem, Doctors at the Murtala Muhammed hospital told distraught, grieving Malam Badamasi the devastating fact that, Rumaisa was raped, and forcibly penetrated from back and front.

Speaking with Correspondents of Neptune Prime, Barrister Badamasi Suleiman revealed that, the scum and a scoundrel of a health giver have since been arrested and arraigned on two counts of charges of rape and homicide. The trial Judge sitting in Court CMC number 51, Kano ordered that Manir Mai Chemist be remanded in a correctional centre while awaiting trial.

Barrister Suleiman also revealed the many “weird attempts” to pervert the course of justice by stopping legal proceedings of the matter.

“You will be shocked to know that several powerful interests had tried to stop me from pressing the case. They didn’t want it to get to the court. In their opinion, the matter could be settled amicably. Can you imagine?

“They were flaunting money here and there in their efforts to either dissuade me from pursuing the case or to compromise relevant officials of the law. But I stuck to my gun and succeeded after about ten days, to get the case to the court.

” Alhamdulillah, (glory be to God), the man has been arraigned and sent to remand in prison awaiting trial. Insha Allah, we will remain resolute to the end until we get justice for Rumaisa.”

The unfortunate, sickening experience of Rumaisa is so reminiscent of that of Hanifa Abubakar, incidentally yet in Kano state, who, in 2022, was kidnapped and later murdered by her Headteacher through rat poison.

The Rumaisa incident also brings to mind the case of thirteen-year-old Elizabeth Ochenya, who died in Benue state in 2018 as a result of complications from the repeated rape and sodomizing she suffered from her guardian, Andrew Ogbuja, and his son, Victor.

In all the incidents, the three little girls were victims of those in whose hands and custody they should ideally feel safe and secure. Manir Mai Chemist is supposedly a medical practitioner who is, therefore, expected to have, in abundance, the milk of human kindness.

Angelic and innocent Hanifa Abubakar was killed by the very man she used to affectionately call her uncle. The unfortunate Elizabeth Ochenya was sent to her early grave by her bestial guardian, the husband of her aunty, and, wait for it, a Senior lecturer at the Benue State Polytechnic.
